Early Life
Akshay Kumar was born in Amritsar in Punjab. His father, Hari Om Bhatia served in the Indian army and had an interest in wrestling. Akshay’s mother is Aruna Bhatia. Since his early childhood days, Akshay started developing a keen interest in sports. He spent his childhood in Delhi and resided in the Chandni Chowk area. His father quit his job in the Army and shifted to Mumbai after he joined UNICEF as an accountant. In Mumbai, the family lived in Koliwada. Akshay Kumar was sent to the prestigious Don Bosco School to pursue his studies. It was at this time that he started learning Karate. Akshay joined the Guru Nanak Khalsa College for graduation. However, he had very little interest in studies so he quit college and dropped out.
Akshay Kumar conveyed his wish of learning martial arts to his father. He became an expert in Taekwondo for which he worked hard and obtained a black belt. Thereafter, he went to Thailand. Akshay Kumar started learning martial arts and Thai Boxing in Bangkok, where he stayed for 5 years. Akshay Kumar took up minor jobs and worked as a cook and waiter during his stay in Thailand. After leaving Thailand, Akshay returned to India and worked in Kolkata in a travel company. He also worked in a hotel in Dhaka. After that, Akshay Kumar went to Delhi and got involved in the work of selling Kundan jewellery. Thereafter, he came to Mumbai, where he taught martial arts.
A guardian of a student of Akshay Kumar asked him to do modelling. He did modeling for a furniture shop. Thus, his modelling career began with this. He made his first portfolio by working free for a photographer, Jayesh Sheth. Akshay Kumar took up minor dancing roles in movies as a background dancer. Having missed a flight for a shooting assignment, Akshay went to a film studio. He bagged a leading role in the movie Deedar.
Acting Career
Akshay Kumar appeared in a Hindi movie for the first time in the movie Saugandh in 1991. The year 1992 saw the release of the movie Khiladi, which launched him in Bollywood as a great star that gave him the nickname Khiladi Kumar. This movie gave him a much-needed breakthrough. It was a suspense thriller and its director was Abbas Mustan. Akshay Kumar played the role of a police inspector in some movies. He acted in the movie Dil To Pagal Hai in which he had a supporting role. The other stars in this movie were Shah Rukh Khan and Madhuri Dixit. Later, many Khiladi series movies of Akshay Kumar were released in which he gave stunning performances. His movies were commercially successful at the box office. Akshay Kumar has performed some amazing stunts and acts in his movies for which he has received the love and appreciation of fans. He has acted with top actresses like Madhuri Dixit, Karishma Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai, Priyanka Chopra, and other female actors. In 2016, his movie Airlift became a commercial hit.
