Coldplay is a famous rock band popular for their live performance. The band was formed in 1996. They have experience of a couple of decades in the music business. They are known for their impactful live music performances, which show culture, advocacy and achievements.  They recently performed on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury Festival in 2024. This was the fifth time they made headlines being part of the iconic festival. 

Here are some interesting facts about the Coldplay rock band:

Was the Coldplay band known by any other names?

Coldplay was formed in 1996 when Chris Martin met lead guitarist Jonny Buckland at university in London. Initially, the duo was known as Pectoralz. Later, when Guy Berryman joined as the bassist, they changed their name to Starfish. Drummer and backing vocalist Will Champion joined afterward, and in 1998, the band finally adopted the name Coldplay.

What was the motivation to name Coldplay's 2000 song ‘Yellow’? 

It was just because Chris Martin spotted the Yellow Pages when he was trying to think of a name for the song. 

Where are Coldplay from? 

It is said that the members met at university in London. They are from all over the UK. Chris Martin is from a village near Exeter in Devon. Jonny Buckland comes from London. Guy Berryman was born in Kirkcaldy, Scotland, and Will Champion is from Southampton.

Have they ever gone to university? 

As they met in university, so they did. Three members of Coldplay were in the university pursuing their degrees when the band started out and Guy decided to work in a London bar.

Yes, it was played in reverse where Chris is walking backwards and telling the storyline from end to beginning.

Yes, the Coldplay take the London tube. Chris once travelled to his own concert at the O2 Arena in London by tube. And on the way no one recognized him.

They have their own studio at North London. It was originally a bakery in 2006, which was converted into a studio.

Coldplay's first release was in 1998 called 'Safety'. Just 500 copies of that EP were made!
