Early Life
Bhumi Pednekar was born and brought up in Mumbai. She belongs of Konkani and Haryanvi descent. Her father was from a political background. He was a former home and labor minister, in Maharashtra state. Her mother was an anti-tobacco activist. She completed her early education at Arya Vidya Mandir, Juhu. To desire to be an actor and fulfill her dreams, her parents took the loan and admitted her to Whistling Woods International to learn acting. She was a part of Yash Raj Films for many years and worked as an assistant film director.
Acting Career
Bhumi Pednekar started her acting career with Yash Raj Films itself. She first appeared in the movie Dum Laga Ke Haisha. She played the role of overweighted wife and during that film, she gained twelve kg body weight. She was cast with actor Ayushmann Khurrana in this film. The film was a big success and it bagged National Film Award for the best feature film in Hindi. Bhumi Pednekar's performance was outstanding in this film and she won the Filmfare award for best Female Debut. Later after two years she was cast with Akshay Kumar in Film Toilet: Ek Prem Katha. The film was based on the eradication of open defecation. She played the role of the strong young lady who brought a revolution on open defecation issues. The film became her highest-grossing film. She was also part of Zoya Akhtar’s Film Lust stories.
In the year 2019, Bhumi Pednekar was signed for a crime drama film named Sonchiriya. Sushant Singh Rajput and Manoj Bajpayee were the other two actors opposite her. For the film, she went through hard training and preparation for the role. Bhumi Pednekar was next seen in a biographical film named Saand Ki Aankh in which she portrayed the role of Chandro Tomar as a septuagenarian sharpshooter.
Taapsee Pannu was the co-actor with her in this movie. Both of them received Screen Award and Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress for the above film. She continued to play some strong roles in her upcoming movies like Bala and Pati Patni Aur Woh. For Bala, it was the third time she was collaborating with actor Ayushmann Khurrana. She played the role of a dark-skinned woman who faced several rejections in life. In Pati Patni Aur Who, she played the role of the wife of Kartik Aaryan who is having an extra-marital affair.
She played a lead role in a horror film called Durgamati which was the remake of Bhaagamathie. After a long gap, Bhumi Pednekar signed the comedy-drama film Badhaai Do in the year 2022. She was opposite Rajkummar Rao in this film.
